Karnataka government transfers Surathkal incident probe to CID

The Criminal Investigation Department will investigate three cases, including an alleged suicide and a complaint of abetment to suicide.

The Karnataka government has transferred the investigation of three cases related to the Surathkal incident to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), according to the Deccan Herald.

City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH stated that the probe includes the alleged suicide of 48-year-old Somanath Puthran and a complaint regarding abetment to suicide.

Puthran was booked for allegedly harassing a couple at a beach on October 25. He reportedly died by suicide on October 27, two days after the case was filed.

Puthran's wife, Saritha, filed a complaint alleging that the couple involved in the beach incident threatened her husband, leading to his death.

The Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha demanded compensation for the family of Puthran on Monday.

Fishermen's organisations have issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the suspension of police personnel allegedly responsible for humiliating Puthran, warning of massive protests if the deadline is not met.
