Pune will become model city in urban mobility, says Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3 and laid the foundation stone for Phase-II.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that 120 kilometres of metro lines in Pune have been completed or are under construction. According to ANI, Fadnavis expressed confidence that this expansion would make the city a model for urban mobility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro projects worth approximately Rs 21,800 crore via video conferencing. This included the inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3, also known as the Pink Line, which was built at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore.

The 23-kilometre Pink Line connects Maan to the District Court metro station, providing connectivity between the Hinjewadi IT hub and Shivajinagar. Fadnavis noted that the corridor is expected to generate 30 per cent of its own energy requirements.

The Chief Minister stated that the project is important for Hinjewadi and surrounding areas, which he described as the country's IT capital. He said thousands of people commute to the region daily and often face one to two hours of traffic congestion.

Fadnavis said the Government of India provided the entire Viability Gap Funding for the project, while the Maharashtra government managed land and acquisition work. He added that IT professionals had been waiting for the completion of Line 3 for their daily commute.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for Phase-II of the Pune Metro, estimated to cost around Rs 13,500 crore. This phase includes Pune Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A to expand the network across residential and commercial hubs.
