One arrested for disrupting Kerala minister's event at college
Police arrested a former student following the alleged disruption of a speech by Higher Education Minister Roji M John last week.
Police arrested 22-year-old Sidharth Sunil on Tuesday for allegedly disrupting an event at Maharajas College last week. The incident occurred while Kerala Higher Education Minister Roji M John was speaking, according to Rediff.
Sunil, a former student of the college, faces charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including unlawful assembly, rioting, and obstructing a public way. He is also accused of using criminal force to deter a public servant from their duty.
The police stated that a second former student has also been detained regarding the matter. The accused are also facing provisions of the Kerala Prevention of Disturbances of Public Meeting Act, 1961.
The disruption allegedly took place on October 30 by activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI). The group reportedly interrupted the minister to question him about the suspension of 16 SFI students from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, also known as Kalady University.
The students were suspended for protesting against the university's Vice Chancellor, Ciza Thomas.
