Paul Lyngdoh sworn in as Meghalaya Cabinet Minister
The West Shillong MLA will focus on tourism and public safety following the resignation of Metbah Lyngdoh.
West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh took the oath as a Cabinet Minister in the Meghalaya government at Lok Bhavan on Monday. Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar administered the oath of office, according to reports by The News Mill, ANI, and Hindustan Times.
Lyngdoh, who represents the National People’s Party (NPP), has been allocated the tourism portfolio. He stated that he intends to prioritise projects that improve the state's status as a tourism destination and said there would be no compromise on such initiatives.
The new minister also plans to implement measures to improve safety and security for residents and visitors. He mentioned that he intends to review a security plan that had been active until a change in leadership occurred last year.
His induction follows the resignation of United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh on October 31. Metbah Lyngdoh resigned from the cabinet after 11 of the UDP's 12 legislators left the party, leaving him as the sole legislator for the group.
Regarding the resignation of Metbah Lyngdoh, Paul Lyngdoh said he was not aware of the specific circumstances as the matter was handled within the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
The UDP's Central Executive Committee is expected to discuss whether the party will continue to support the MDA government during a meeting on November 3.
