Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra are the top three states for research publications according to the new India S&T Scoreboard.
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have emerged as the leading states in research publications following the launch of the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard on Tuesday, according to Deccan Chronicle.
The scoreboard shows that Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications for 2024-25, while Uttar Pradesh had 29,298 and Maharashtra had 28,947.
Tamil Nadu also holds the highest number of patent applications, with Maharashtra and Karnataka following it in the rankings.
NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said that India's progress in science and technology needs more active participation from states. He stated that the scoreboard would allow states to identify gaps and strengths to design better policies through cooperative and competitive federalism.
NITI Aayog member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar noted that research and innovation data has previously been fragmented across different sources. He said the new interactive dashboard brings ecosystem, publication, and patent data together so states can track progress over time.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare said the platform adds a state-level view to the national evidence base. The scoreboard includes data on higher education, R&D institutions, deep tech startups, and incubators.
