Centre introduces second two-year engagement option for Agniveers
Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani announced that 75 per cent of Agniveers can serve an additional term.
The Union Government has introduced a change to the Agnipath scheme, allowing Agniveers to opt for a second two-year service period after their initial four years. According to Telangana Today, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani announced this Union Cabinet decision during a press conference on Wednesday.
Under the current system, up to 25 per cent of Agniveers are inducted as regular soldiers after four years. The CDS stated that the remaining 75 per cent will now be offered a further two years of service to enhance their skills and experience.
General Subramani said that after this second term, all Agniveers will have the chance to join the regular forces if they are willing and satisfy specific selection criteria. Selection will depend on performance reviews involving efficiency, achievements, and organisational requirements.
The evaluation process will consider factors such as discipline, technical proficiency, morale, motivation, and physical fitness. The CDS noted that the armed forces will also account for operational and organisational needs when making these decisions.
Agniveers in the second service period will receive increased service fund benefits and higher pay. This arrangement is intended to help the military retain trained manpower while providing better financial returns for the extra two years.
The first batch of Agniveers is scheduled to complete its service this month.
