Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury refuses truce with Mamata Banerjee

The senior Congress leader accused the Trinamool Congress of destroying his party in West Bengal through intimidation and poaching.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury asserted on Wednesday that he will not withdraw his opposition to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee. Speaking at a press conference in Murshidabad district's Baharampur, Chowdhury claimed that TMC actions have devastated the Congress in West Bengal over the last 15 years, according to The Federal.

Chowdhury alleged that the TMC has dismantled the organisational foundation of the Congress by using threats and poaching members across different parts of the state. He stated that his stance against Banerjee is based on his political experiences over the last 15 years and will not change due to recent national developments.

The remarks come three days after Banerjee addressed an Opposition rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1, where she referred to Sonia Gandhi as her leader. Chowdhury was also present at that rally.

The former state Congress president declined to predict the future relationship between the two parties. He said the national and state leaderships would decide what happens next and that he would speak on the matter again in the future.

Chowdhury, who represented Baharampur in the Lok Sabha for six consecutive terms, lost his seat in the 2024 general elections to TMC candidate Yusuf Pathan. His long-standing criticism of the TMC has been a factor in bringing the Congress and the Left closer during various elections.
