Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a Rs 313 crore development package for the tea belt and infrastructure in north Bengal during a visit to Siliguri on Tuesday, according to The Telegraph India.
Speaking at Uttarkanya, Adhikari said the Centre has approved the proposal, with the north Bengal development department acting as the nodal department for the funds.
The Chief Minister launched a distribution of Rs 5,000 and 50 kilos of rice to workers of 21 closed tea estates. He stated that 19,524 workers received the amount for upcoming festivities.
Adhikari also said there are plans to increase the monthly food grain quota for each tea worker’s family in north Bengal from 35 kilos to 50 kilos starting in January.
During the visit, Adhikari met 355 representatives from 85 organisations of the Rajbanshi community. Sources said the representatives raised issues including the inclusion of the Rajbanshi/Kamtapuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The Chief Minister also held three administrative meetings to review the progress of ongoing infrastructural projects in the region.
