Heated exchanges in Supreme Court over mic-snatching remarks
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta faced criticism from senior advocates after making comments regarding a previous mic-snatching incident during a hearing.
Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta faced sharp reactions from lawyers during a Supreme Court hearing regarding pleas linked to anti-SIR protests in Delhi, according to The Indian Express.
The exchange occurred when counsel attempting to counter submissions by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who represented traders, were addressed by Mehta. The SG remarked that Rohatgi was fortunate his microphone had not been taken.
Mehta later told the court that he was safe because his microphone was at a distance and could not be snatched, while asking to speak without being shouted at from the other side. These remarks followed a previous incident in the same case where senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan had to withdraw from the matter after a microphone was snatched.
Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy protested the comments, telling Mehta to behave like a constitutional office holder.
In a separate development, Rajasthan Chief Secretary S Srinivas met Cabinet Secretary Dr T V Somanathan at Seva Teerth on Tuesday. Srinivas briefed Somanathan on the state's progress in deregulation and the Gyan Bharatam Mission, which focuses on digitising manuscript heritage.
Srinivas presented Somanathan with a 'Raj Sakhi' Diwali gift hamper. The hamper, prepared by women's self-help groups under the Mission Rajeevika initiative, included a stole, soap, two candles, and two sofa cushion covers.
