Delhi air quality worsens as AQI hits 508 at Mandir Marg

Pollution levels in the capital remained in the Very Poor category on Wednesday despite the implementation of GRAP-2 restrictions.

Air pollution in Delhi remained in the Very Poor category at 6 am on Wednesday, according to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). The Air Quality Index (AQI) at Mandir Marg reached 508, falling into the Severe category, according to the Indian Express.

The IITM reported that the AQI was 379 at 4 pm on Tuesday, up from 350 14 hours earlier. Private tracker AQI.in placed the capital in the Hazardous category at approximately 11 am on Tuesday with a reading of 579. The IITM has warned that the current air quality could lead to more serious health issues.

The city's air quality has risen since recent showers abated. The IITM predicts that Delhi will remain in the Very Poor category on Thursday with a forecast AQI of 343.

In response, the Public Works Department (PWD) is deploying 200 truck-mounted anti-smog guns to clean a 1,400 km road network. These guns, which can spray water up to 50 metres high, will be inspected by two committees of eight officials before use.

In Gurugram, the administration has banned dust-generating construction and demolition from November 5 to 20. Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh has also directed that 50 per cent of staff in private offices work from home, according to a PTI report.
