Pune RTO starts inspections as private bus fares reach Rs 7,000
The Pune Regional Transport Office is checking operators following allegations that ticket prices for Diwali travel have increased significantly on popular routes.
The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) launched a special inspection drive on November 1 to check private bus operators accused of overcharging passengers. According to Urban Acres, the drive will continue until November 20, 2026, to address rising fares during the Diwali travel rush.
Some passengers alleged that fares on certain routes increased two to three times compared to normal levels. One passenger claimed on social media that a fare rose from Rs 700 to Rs 4,000, while other complaints cited tickets priced between Rs 6,000 and Rs 7,000.
Officials stated that private contract bus operators are not permitted to charge more than 1.5 times the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation fare for the same bus category. The RTO also noted that operators must display fare charts inside their vehicles.
Inspection teams are examining ticket prices, permits, passenger capacity, and the presence of mandatory safety equipment. Officials warned that action will be taken against operators found charging more than the permitted rate.
Passengers who suspect they have been overcharged can call the RTO helpline at 1800-22-0110. Officials requested that complainants submit ticket photographs along with bus details. Transport Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar could not be reached for comment.
