Driver who ran over Madhya Pradesh police officer arrested

Accused Gajendra Rawat sustained a leg injury during a police encounter while being transported to Dewas district.

Police have arrested Gajendra Rawat, the driver accused of running over a police officer in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district. According to The Hindu, Rawat was apprehended in Alirajpur district and sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during a brief encounter with police in the Barothha police station area while being moved to Dewas.

The incident occurred on Monday, November 2, 2026, when Inspector Dilip Puri, in charge of the Khategaon police station, died after being allegedly mowed down by a truck. The vehicle was reportedly carrying illicit liquor to Gujarat when the inspector stopped it for checking. A constable was also injured in the incident.

Special DG Upendra Jain said the truck contained approximately 1,800 litres of illegal liquor. Investigations uncovered an inter-state bootlegging network supplying liquor from Harda district to Alirajpur and then into Gujarat. Rawat allegedly fled the scene by crossing a road divider and abandoning the vehicle.

Three people have been arrested so far, including Rahul Jaiswal, who allegedly ran the racket from Harda, associate Vijay Rao, and truck owner Kairam Singh Changod. Police stated that Jaiswal admitted to being a Congress functionary in Dewas. Authorities are currently searching for three of Jaiswal's alleged business partners.

In a separate matter, Dewas Police arrested Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Anand Kasliwal regarding an investigation into a counterfeit liquor racket. Officers alleged Kasliwal tampered with evidence and sales records at the shop of his son, Aman Kasliwal, who was detained on October 28 for his alleged role in providing chemicals used for making fake liquor.
