Guwahati shooting accused Ghanakanta Gogoi dies after police firing in Assam

Gogoi died while being taken to hospital after allegedly attempting to snatch a sub-inspector's pistol in Sivasagar district.

Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in an October 26 shooting at a Guwahati hotel that killed five people, died on Wednesday in Assam's Sivasagar district. According to News18, Gogoi died while being transported to a hospital after police opened fire during an alleged attempt to seize an officer's weapon.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Papori Chetia said the incident occurred at Phulpanichiga. Gogoi was being moved from Guwahati Central Jail to Sivasagar regarding a 2024 bank fraud case when he asked to exit the vehicle to relieve himself.

Chetia, as quoted by ANI, stated that Gogoi, described as a trained professional shooter, tried to grab the service pistol of Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma. Sharma was also the investigating officer for the bank fraud case.

During the struggle, two to three rounds were discharged. Two bullets hit the police vehicle, and one struck Sharma in his right leg. A member of the police team fired back to protect the officer and others, causing critical injuries to Gogoi.

SSP Chetia confirmed that Sub-Inspector Sharma is currently stable. Police have cordoned off the area at Phulpanichiga and a forensic team has arrived to examine the scene as an investigation begins.

Gogoi was previously arrested for the October 26 shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn, where five people died following a dispute over a lease agreement. The deceased were identified as Bhudev Bharali, Helena Bharali, Debarshi Kashyap, Rinika Kashyap, and Narayan Das.
