Hyderabad water tanker supplies resume after agreement with Hydraa

The Hyderabad Water Tankers Association ended its strike by agreeing to source borewell water from locations outside the Outer Ring Road.

Hyderabad water tanker supplies have resumed after the Hyderabad Water Tankers Association ended its strike, according to reports from Telangana Today and Urban Acres. The association agreed to collect borewell water only from areas outside the Outer Ring Road (ORR) after obtaining necessary permissions, Hydraa Commissioner A V Ranganath said on Wednesday.

The decision followed meetings between Hydraa officials and association members led by president Chandrashekar. Previously, Hydraa had directed operators to cease illegal groundwater extraction in densely populated areas within the ORR, noting that inadequate rainfall linked to El Niño had caused groundwater levels to drop significantly.

Tanker operators had typically used nearby extraction points to save on fuel and travel time. This practice increased pressure on groundwater in high-demand areas such as Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Ameerpet, and Ashok Nagar, where many paying-guest hostels operate.

Residents' welfare associations and various colonies had raised concerns regarding illegal commercial extraction and the drying up of domestic borewells. The new arrangement aims to ensure commercial establishments receive uninterrupted supplies while moving extraction away from heavily populated neighbourhoods.

Hydraa stated it will work with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and other departments to prevent large-scale commercial exploitation of groundwater in high-demand localities.
