India and Bangladesh will continue to engage through a Joint River Commission to address water-related issues, according to a report by The Hindu.
The Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs described the commission as a structured mechanism that will deal with the Ganga Water Treaty.
The Ganga Water Treaty is scheduled to expire on December 12, 2026. The spokesperson indicated that both sides will remain engaged at the commission level irrespective of the treaty's status.
India and Bangladesh share approximately 54 rivers. The Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Teesta are the three major rivers vital to flood-preparation and agriculture in Bangladesh.
The two nations agreed to establish the Joint River Commission to manage all river-water-related issues following the 1971 war.
