Iran reported that four tankers caught fire after striking naval mines while attempting to pass through the prohibited passage.
Four oil tankers were destroyed after striking naval mines while attempting to pass through a prohibited passage south of the Strait of Hormuz, according to The Hindu on Wednesday.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps stated that the tankers were still burning and that two other non-compliant vessels had been halted. The group also said a drone was shot down over the strait.
The incident follows reports of a raid on Qeshm, the largest island in the strait. US President Donald Trump said the United States had launched strikes on the Islamic Republic.
The ongoing conflict began in February following strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. While the situation has remained at a standstill for several months, indirect contact between the two nations continues through mediators.
Tehran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the country was ready for battle. However, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Tuesday that his government is attempting to resolve the crisis through dialogue.
President Pezeshkian added that no one would benefit from a return to war if fighting resumes.
