Social media trends and ratings race threaten journalism credibility, says CM Satheesan
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated that mainstream media organisations are increasingly following trends set by social media platforms.
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan cautioned on Tuesday that the pursuit of higher ratings and the impact of social media trends are damaging journalistic credibility in the state.
Speaking at the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Satheesan said that mainstream media outlets are following trends established by social media, where any individual can publish content, according to The Hindu.
The Chief Minister described the influence of social media on mainstream journalism as a major challenge for the media sector. He noted that while print media previously maintained restraint, the rise of visual media has led to intense competition.
Satheesan alleged that baseless stories are being manufactured to increase ratings, which undermines the reputation of journalists and their institutions. He added that while print media used to publish apologies for errors, this practice is being abandoned.
The Chief Minister stated that criticism of those in important positions is a necessary part of journalism. He said the media should point out his mistakes to prompt corrections, provided the criticism is based on facts and relevant issues.
Satheesan concluded by saying that senior journalists and media organisations have a responsibility to identify and correct unhealthy trends within the sector to protect the rights of readers and viewers.
