Rahul Gandhi must explain Congress role in 1984 Sikh genocide, says Tarun Chugh
The BJP leader challenged the Congress leader to address the suffering of families affected by the 1984 violence during his Punjab visit.
BJP leader Tarun Chugh on Tuesday asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to answer questions regarding the families affected by the 1984 Sikh genocide ahead of Gandhi's visit to Punjab, according to the Deccan Herald.
Chugh, a Rajya Sabha MP, stated that the people of Punjab have not forgotten the 1984 period when thousands of families were impacted. He said the violence was one of the most painful chapters in India's history.
The BJP leader questioned what the Congress party actually did to secure justice for the victims. He also remarked that the decision by Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to organise a protest at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on November 1 was insensitive to the memories of those killed.
Gandhi and the Congress leadership are scheduled to participate in the 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur, Punjab, on Wednesday.
Chugh also called on Punjab Congress leaders, including Pargat Singh, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, and Partap Singh Bajwa, to clarify their positions on the 1984 riots. He asked if they would demand accountability for the historical record of the Congress party.
The BJP leader concluded by asking if Gandhi would meet the families of the victims to listen to their suffering and acknowledge the historical responsibility of the Congress party.
