Manipur may declare armed groups involved in civilian violence unlawful, says CM

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has directed security agencies to identify armed groups suspected of participating in recent violence against civilians.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh stated that the State Cabinet may consider declaring certain armed groups unlawful if they are found to be involved in violence against innocent civilians, according to The Economic Times.

During a security review meeting in Guwahati, the Chief Minister asked security officers to identify active armed groups suspected of recent violence, though he excluded those currently engaged in peace talks.

Singh instructed security agencies to provide a comprehensive report regarding the participation of these groups in the violence as soon as possible.

The Chief Minister added that any groups that continue to commit violence against the civilian population will face necessary action under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The meeting included Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, and Director General of Police Mukesh Singh, among other senior officials and central security agency representatives.
