Tamil Nadu leads in research and patents on Niti Aayog scoreboard
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra emerged as the top three states for research publications in the new India S&T Scoreboard.
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have been identified as the leading states in research publications according to the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched on Tuesday, Rediff reported. The interactive platform was introduced by Niti Aayog to assist states in formulating science and technology policies through evidence-based data.
In the 2024-25 period, Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications. Uttar Pradesh followed with 29,298 publications, while Maharashtra recorded 28,947. Regarding patent applications, Tamil Nadu held the first position, with Maharashtra and Karnataka following in the rankings.
Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri stated that the progress of science and technology in India necessitates more active participation from states. He noted that the scoreboard would allow states to identify gaps and strengths to design better programmes through cooperative and competitive federalism.
Niti Aayog Member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar said that previous data on research and innovation was fragmented across various sources. He explained that the new dashboard integrates ecosystem, publication, and patent data to help states track their progress over time.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare said the scoreboard provides a valuable state-level view for the national evidence base. The platform includes data on higher education, R&D institutions, deep tech startups, and incubators across academia, industry, and government labs.
