Ophthalmologists urge caution against firecracker eye injuries during Diwali

Medical experts advise people to take specific precautions to prevent vision loss and eye damage while celebrating the festival.

Ophthalmologists in Hyderabad have advised the public to be careful while lighting firecrackers during the upcoming Diwali celebrations, according to Telangana Today.

Dr Navya Cherukuri, an ophthalmologist at the LVPEI Kallam Anji Reddy campus, said that firecracker accidents can cause issues ranging from surface scratches and irritation to serious conditions like retinal damage, bleeding inside the eye, or permanent loss of sight.

To ensure safety, Dr Cherukuri suggested buying fireworks from authorised manufacturers and drying them in the sun for two days. She also recommended storing crackers in cardboard boxes away from flammable items like oil cans or gas cylinders and keeping them out of reach of children.

The doctor advised that parents must supervise children closely during celebrations. She stated that simple precautions can help ensure that festivities remain safe and joyful.

If debris enters an eye, the expert advised rinsing it gently with clean water instead of attempting to remove it at home. People should avoid rubbing or applying pressure to an injured eye and should not use home remedies, creams, or ointments without professional advice.

In the event of an injury, the recommendation is to keep the eye closed, perhaps using a clean cloth or eye shield, and to seek immediate medical help at an emergency room or from an eye care professional.
