Sleep alone cannot resolve mental health issues, says psychologist

Dr Munia Bhattacharya explains that while rest helps concentration and emotional regulation, it does not fix grief or chronic anxiety.

Resting is not a complete solution for mental health concerns like anxiety and depression, according to Dr Munia Bhattacharya, a senior consultant in clinical psychology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Bhattacharya noted that while sleep provides an exhausted mind a break and improves concentration, patience, and emotional regulation, it cannot make problems like grief, unresolved trauma, or depression disappear.

The psychologist observed that many people report feeling anxious even after getting eight hours of sleep every night. She stated that waking up rested while a problem remains is a sign that something else may need attention.

Bhattacharya also highlighted that some individuals experience stress because they are afraid of not sleeping. She noted that people may check the clock or calculate how the next day will go, but the mind does not always cooperate with such commands.

The psychologist advised people not to use sleep as a test of mental health. She suggested that if someone is sleeping reasonably well but still feels persistently anxious, empty, or overwhelmed, they should listen to that signal.
