Poor infrastructure at Tiruchy leprosy centre affects patients from four districts

Inadequate seating and unhygienic conditions at the nearly 100-year-old facility have reportedly caused some patients to stop visiting regularly.

Patients from Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Karur districts are facing difficulties accessing treatment at the Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy) office near the Tiruchy Central Bus Stand, according to The New Indian Express.

The nearly 100-year-old building suffers from deteriorating infrastructure, unhygienic surroundings, and insufficient seating for patients. The facility receives an average of 25 patients every day.

The premises is reportedly littered with garbage and waste from nearby hotels and commercial establishments. Officials said the campus lacks a proper compound wall, allowing unrestricted access to outsiders.

Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy) A Shanthi said the department has petitioned several times for a new structure because the existing building is inadequate for patients and staff.

While some patients have moved to collecting medicines through block-level facilities, the central facility remains important for those seeking direct consultations and medical examinations.

An additional building within the premises remains locked and unused, while the main structure continues to host administrative and treatment activities.
