Tamil Nadu allows six daily shows for new Tamil films

The state government has increased the daily screening limit for new Tamil films during their first week of release.

The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that theatres across the state can now host up to six daily screenings of newly released Tamil films for one week from their release date. According to reports from The Hindu and The New Indian Express, these shows can run between 6 am and 2.30 am the following day.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed that the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, be amended to implement this change. The decision follows requests from the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association.

Previously, the TVK-led government allowed five shows per day during the first seven days of a film's release. This limit also applied to Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and local festival days. Under earlier regulations, theatres were restricted to four shows a day.

The move aims to accommodate demand for new releases during their opening week. The government will propose necessary amendments to the existing cinema regulations to give effect to the new screening permissions.
