UDF's past actions undermined road safety, says Pinarayi Vijayan
The Leader of the Opposition claimed the Congress-led coalition previously opposed traffic regulations for political advantage.
Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan said on Wednesday that recent road accidents and loss of lives in the State are consequences of the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) earlier efforts to dismantle road safety and traffic regulations.
According to The Hindu, Vijayan stated that the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had implemented initiatives to curb accidents and instill traffic discipline, which the UDF had mocked and opposed.
Vijayan said the previous government sought to safeguard lives by prohibiting dangerous vehicle modifications, installing AI-monitored cameras, and enforcing rigorous inspections.
The Leader of the Opposition alleged that the UDF called for covering traffic cameras with baskets and encouraged lawbreakers for political gain, effectively undermining safety systems.
Vijayan cited recent accidents in Nedumbassery, where three people died after being allegedly hit by a car driven by an intoxicated youth, and an incident in Cheranalloor where a minor allegedly killed a street-side food vendor while driving dangerously.
He said those who spearheaded the destruction of traffic discipline must bear responsibility and demonstrate a sincere commitment to enforcing the law.
