Indian wild cards Vaishnavi Adkar and Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi recorded their first Tour-level victories at the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Tuesday.
Indian wild cards Vaishnavi Adkar and Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi secured their maiden Tour-level wins at the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Tuesday at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, according to The Hindu and Sportstar.
Vaishnavi Adkar, the 21-year-old from Maharashtra and India’s top women's player, defeated Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. The match lasted approximately 2 hours and 47 minutes.
Adkar, who began the year at World No. 681, noted that the humidity made the balls feel heavy and fluffy. She said she focused on putting back an extra ball to keep pressure on Burrage, as her coach advised that tennis is often 'gray' rather than 'black or white'.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, a 17-year-old from Coimbatore and World No. 669, upset Polish World No. 115 Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5). Revathi overcame a 2-5 deficit in the deciding set to win the match.
Adkar, who joined Rohan Bopanna’s Tennis Academy in Bengaluru, said she feels more confident and physically and mentally stronger. Revathi will face Weronika Falkowska in the round of 16.
