The former American junior No. 1 defeated fourth seed Panna Udvary in a three-set match on Tuesday.
American tennis player Robin Montgomery advanced to the round of 16 at the WTA Chennai Open on Tuesday. According to The Times of India, Montgomery defeated fourth seed Panna Udvary with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
The 22-year-old, who was previously the American junior No. 1, won the junior US Open singles and doubles titles in 2021. She recently won her first WTA 250 title at the Libéma Open in June this year.
Montgomery said that she has been prone to injuries, including a wrist injury that kept her out of action for nearly 10 months last year. She stated that she used that time to learn new things about herself on and off the court.
The player noted that she has been out for at least three months each year since turning professional. She also mentioned that while equal prize money is a step in the right direction, there is room for improvement regarding sponsorships and coaching.
Montgomery, who is currently travelling without her coach Denis Kudla, said that financial considerations and sponsorship support remain important aspects for women's tennis.
