Fourteen medical students suspended for ragging at Kamareddy college

The second-year MBBS students at Government Medical College, Kamareddy, face suspensions following a complaint to the National Medical Commission.

Fourteen second-year MBBS students at Government Medical College (GMC), Kamareddy, have been suspended following allegations of ragging first-year students, according to reports by The Hindu and Deccan Chronicle.

The disciplinary action follows a complaint sent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) anti-ragging cell by junior students. The NMC then notified the college principal and local police.

GMC principal Dr B. Valya stated that the second-year students, who live outside the college hostel, entered an unauthorised area of the hostel where first and final-year students reside. Deccan Chronicle reported that the students allegedly made juniors sing songs and interacted with them outside the college.

The suspensions vary based on the severity of the allegations. Four students have been suspended for six months, while 10 others have been suspended for four months.

Kamareddy Superintendent of Police M. Rajesh Chandra said that because the college took action, no case was registered. He noted that video evidence was found in connection with the allegations.

The college is preparing to submit an action-taken report to the NMC. Dr Ramadevi, Academic Director of Medical Education, confirmed the suspensions were carried out in accordance with NMC norms.
