Tamil Nadu launches subsidised vegetable kit for ₹100
Cooperative shops across the state will sell the 10-variety package for three days ahead of the Deepavali festival.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Cooperation V. Gandhiraj launched the sale of the ‘Vettri Special Vegetables Kit’ on Thursday in Chennai. According to The Hindu, the package contains 10 different varieties of vegetables and is being sold at a subsidised rate of ₹100.
The kit includes 500g each of onion and tomato, 250g each of brinjal and potato, 200g each of carrot and beans, 100g each of green chilli and lemon, 50g of ginger, and a coconut weighing between 400g and 450g. The total weight of the items ranges from 2.55 kg to 2.6 kg.
The sale is available at 218 cooperative shops across the state and through four mobile vending vehicles in Chennai. To ensure wider benefits, the state government has limited the purchase to one kit per person.
An official release stated that the initiative aims to provide the public with fresh, quality vegetables at prices lower than market rates before the Deepavali festival. The sale will continue for three days, ending on November 7.
Beneficiaries told The Hindu that the scheme is helpful during the festival season and amid food inflation, noting that the items would cost over ₹150 if bought individually in the market.
