Chennai tailors experience increased workload during Deepavali festive season
Tailors in Chennai are managing higher order volumes and longer working hours to meet festive demands, according to The New Indian Express.
Tailors across Chennai are experiencing a surge in orders during the Deepavali festive season, leading to increased working hours to meet deadlines, according to The New Indian Express.
Oviya, a tailor at Born2Win Trans Boutique in Saidapet, said the Deepavali season has been much better than expected. She noted that the high volume of orders makes it difficult to complete all stitching within the available time.
In Tambaram, Jeevaa, who has run Jeevaa Fashion for 15 years, said business typically picks up around August or September with Navaratri before peaking during Deepavali. She added that Christmas and the Pongal period in January and February also bring busy periods.
Tailors are also adapting to new design trends. Devi, who runs Grace Boutique in T Nagar, said customers increasingly bring pictures from Instagram and AI-generated designs for customisation. Gopal, a tailor in T Nagar for 25 years, also observed customers using AI to curate outfit designs.
S Sivagami, who runs Aksharaa Fashion in Mogappair West, said she researches unfamiliar patterns on sample pieces before accepting orders. During Deepavali, she works approximately 10 to 12 hours a day to manage her workload and bulk orders.
The festive income helps tailors manage operational costs like rent and electricity. At Grace Boutique, Devi charges Rs 300 for a regular outfit and Rs 750 for a lined garment, while Sivagami charges Rs 350 for an unlined blouse.
