Women in Punjab make 1.20 crore free bus journeys every month

The Punjab government scheme provides free travel for women in state-run buses using Aadhaar card identification.

Women in Punjab are making approximately 1.20 crore free bus journeys every month, according to The Tribune.

The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, started the free travel scheme for women in state government-run buses in 2021.

About 3.5 lakh women avail of this facility on a daily basis. The scheme is used by students, working women, and those travelling from villages to hospitals and markets.

To use the facility, women are required to provide an Aadhaar card for identification. The scheme is intended to increase mobility for education, employment, and health services.

The Punjab government is now planning to make the operation of the scheme more systematic and digital. Preparations are underway to introduce a smart card system for women to allow card-based verification instead of Aadhaar.
