Punjab government agrees to Rs 2 crore aid for Jhota family
A planned protest outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's residence was called off after ministers met with the protest panel.
The Punjab government has agreed to provide Rs 2 crore in compensation and a government job for the wife of anti-drug activist Parwinder Singh Jhota. According to reports from Urban Acres and The Times of India, this decision follows a four-hour meeting between Punjab ministers and the Parvinder Singh Jhota Insaf Morcha panel.
The agreement includes the release of Lakha Sidhana and Mohanjit Singh Sheron from jail, who were detained in connection with protests regarding Jhota's death. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian also stated that first information reports (FIRs) filed against protesters would be withdrawn.
The panel agreed to allow the postmortem of Jhota, who was killed in Mansa on October 13, to take place at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. This consent is subject to the fulfilment of the panel's demands, including the release of the arrested men and the cancellation of cases.
While the protest outside the Chief Minister's residence in Sangrur has been cancelled, the panel noted that demonstrations in Mansa will continue. The police will approach the court to seek the cancellation of the registered cases.
Speaker Sandhwan described the loss to the family as irreparable and noted that the government decided to accept certain demands. Jhota's father, Bhim Singh, expressed gratitude to Sandhwan and Khudian for meeting the family's requirements.
