Delhi construction ban to pause PWD projects until November 20

The restriction on dust-generating activities affects road, flyover and underpass works as authorities attempt to control air pollution.

A construction ban in Delhi from November 5 to November 20 is set to disrupt several Public Works Department (PWD) projects, according to Urban Acres. The restriction targets construction and demolition activities that generate dust and pollution to control air quality in the National Capital Region.

The immediate impact is expected on PWD road, flyover and underpass projects, including work on the Modi Mill flyover. The department is also undertaking road repairs and laying new surfaces with a target to complete these by November 30.

Exemptions have been granted to hospitals and certain nationally important projects. Other exempt categories include metro, railway, airport, interstate bus terminal, water-supply and sanitation projects.

The interruption follows earlier challenges for Delhi's road infrastructure, including higher bitumen prices linked to the conflict in West Asia and construction delays caused by the monsoon. While the PWD was expected to accelerate work after the rains, the pollution-related restriction has created a pause.

Experts noted that construction restrictions could be extended if air quality remains poor, which may affect the November 30 target and push large-scale activity towards the end of February. Authorities will determine whether activities can resume or if further measures are required after the current restriction ends on November 20.
