Assam Cabinet approves defence park and CBI probe into floods
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced several decisions including new polygamy rules for government officials and increased paddy rates.
The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday approved the development of a defence park and a CBI investigation into recent flashfloods in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts, according to The Sentinel and ANI.
The proposed defence park will occupy 6,000 bighas of land near Nellie in Nagaon district to encourage the manufacturing of defence equipment within the state.
Regarding administrative discipline, the Cabinet approved amendments to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964. Government employees found guilty of polygamy will face dismissal from service and may be barred from future government employment.
Chief Minister Sarma stated the measure aims to enforce disciplinary action, promote equality, and protect women from harmful practices.
To support agriculture, the state will provide additional support to paddy farmers. The Chief Minister noted that farmers will now receive Rs 2,640 per quintal for the current Kharif Marketing Season, an increase from Rs 2,569 per quintal last year.
The Cabinet also cleared several ropeway projects to improve connectivity and tourism. This includes a 1.43-km stretch from Kamakhya railway station to the Kamakhya temple and an 11-km route from Khanapara to Guwahati railway station.
Additionally, the state will submit a request to the CBI within 10 days to investigate the root causes of the floods in Charaideo and Sivasagar.
