Guwahati hotel firing survivor discharged from hospital
Satyendra Pathak was released from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Thursday after responding well to treatment.
The lone survivor of the Guwahati hotel firing incident was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, according to reports by Hindustan Times. Satyendra Pathak, a driver for the Bharali family, had been undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) following the shooting on October 26.
GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury told PTI that Pathak is fully stable and was released with a police escort to his village in Barpeta. Choudhury noted that a bullet had passed through Pathak's right hand without damaging vital nerves. Pathak is expected to resume work in about a week following a post-discharge checkup.
The firing at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati resulted in five deaths. The deceased were identified as Bhudev Bharali, his sister Helena, her son Debarshi Kashyap, daughter-in-law Rinika Kashyap, and family staffer Narayan Das.
The incident allegedly arose from a dispute between the property owners and the leaseholder, Ghanakanta Gogoi, regarding hotel management. A police statement said that an argument escalated into a physical fight before Gogoi opened fire on six people.
The prime accused, Gogoi, was killed in a police encounter in the Gaurisagar area of Sivasagar district early on Wednesday. The encounter occurred around 3.10 am while he was allegedly attempting to escape from custody during transport for a separate case.
Gogoi had been arrested following the hotel shooting with a licensed.32-bore pistol. He was also arrested from Guwahati Central Jail on Tuesday in connection with a 2024 bank fraud case.
