Vaishnavi Adkar exits Chennai Open after second-round loss to Zakharova
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi remains the only Indian in the singles draw after Adkar's defeat to the Russian player.
Vaishnavi Adkar lost 6-3, 6-0 to Russia's Anastasia Zakharova in the second round of the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Thursday at the SDAT Stadium. According to Sportstar, the 21-year-old Indian wild card struggled against the movement and backhand of the World No. 107 Zakharova.
Adkar, who previously defeated Britain's Jodie Burrage, took a medical timeout during the first set while trailing 2-5 due to a niggle near her hip. She played the remainder of the match with her left thigh strapped. Adkar stated after the match that she did not consider it an injury but a niggle that bothered her during running shots.
The second set lasted 23 minutes, during which Adkar won only four out of 26 points. While Adkar's singles campaign has ended, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has progressed to the doubles quarterfinals alongside partner Shirvalli Bhamdipati after defeating the third-seeded Czech team of Aneta Kucmova and Aneta Laboutkova, Rediff reported.
In the singles competition, 17-year-old Revathi is the only Indian player remaining in the draw. She defeated Polish qualifier Weronika Falkowska 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals and will face American Robin Montgomery on Friday.
Other second-round winners included third-seeded Magda Linette, who defeated Japan's Moyuka Uchijima 7-6(5), 6-0, as well as Japan's Mai Hontama and Italy's Lucrezia Stefanini.
