Maaya Rajeshwaran remains India's sole singles hope at Chennai Open
Vaishnavi Adkar exited the tournament on Thursday after losing her second-round match to Russia's Anastasia Zakharova.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi is the only Indian player left in the women's singles draw at the Chennai Open after national number one Vaishnavi Adkar lost her second-round match on Thursday. Adkar was defeated 3-6, 0-6 by Russia's seventh seed Anastasia Zakharova, according to reports from India Today and Rediff.
The Pune player struggled against Zakharova's powerful backhand and baseline consistency. After trailing 2-5 in the first set, Adkar took a medical timeout for her left thigh and briefly broke the Russian's serve, but she lost the opening set 3-6. Zakharova then won the second set 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals.
Adkar had previously reached the Round of 16 by recovering from a lost opening set to beat Britain's Jodie Burrage 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Wildcard entrant Sahaja Yamalapalli had exited the tournament in the first round on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi progressed to her first WTA quarter-final after defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska 6-4, 6-3. She previously defeated eighth seed Katarzyna Kawa in the opening round. Rajeshwaran Revathi will next play American Robin Montgomery.
In the doubles event, Rajeshwaran Revathi and partner Shirvalli Bhamdipati reached the quarter-finals by defeating the third-seeded Czech team of Aneta Kucmova and Aneta Laboutkova.
