Jaypal Malviya wins silver and secures India's first LA 2028 shooting quota

The Madhya Pradesh shooter finished second in the men's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Championships in Doha.

Jaypal Malviya earned a silver medal in the men's 10m air pistol competition at the ISSF World Championships in Doha on Thursday, according to the Times of India. The performance secured India's first shooting quota for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Malviya scored 242.2 points in the eight-man final to finish second. China's Kai Hu took the gold with 243.9, while Jindrich Dubovy of Czechia won bronze with 220.9.

The shooter entered the final in third place after recording a score of 585 during the qualification round. After an inconsistent start in the final, including a 9.2 on his second attempt, Malviya recovered with scores such as 10.6 and 10.7 to stay in contention.

Malviya said the loud crowd motivated him and expressed gratitude to the federation, SAI, OGQ, and the Madhya Pradesh and Indian governments. He also thanked Samaresh Jung.

The result provides India with a place in the event for the 2028 Olympics, though a quota does not guarantee an individual shooter a spot in the Olympic squad.
