Two dead as under-construction building collapses in Old Delhi
A three-storey building collapsed in the Chawri Bazar area on Thursday morning, killing two people and injuring others.
Two people died and four others were injured after a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar area on Thursday morning, according to reports by ANI and The Hindu.
The incident occurred at approximately 9.48 am at Gali Sheesh Mahal, near the Chawri Bazar Metro Station. Delhi Police stated that two people, identified as 40-year-old Kishori and 45-year-old Sanjeet, died, while two others were rescued and are stable.
Joint rescue operations involving the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are underway. The Hindu reported that some people are feared trapped beneath the rubble.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered an inquiry and the immediate suspension of the area's Assistant Engineer (AE) and Junior Engineer (JE). An FIR is being filed against the contractor.
Police are registering a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the building owners and contractors. Preliminary findings suggest a load-bearing framework failure on a fifty-square-yard plot.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that accidents are occurring every month in the capital. He further alleged that MCD and police officials are collecting money from building owners in the name of safety audits.
