Naga organisations hold rally in Ukhrul demanding Assam Rifles withdrawal

Protesters in Manipur called for a political resolution to the state crisis and an end to an alleged proxy war against the Naga community.

Naga organisations staged a rally in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on November 5, demanding the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Naga-inhabited areas, according to The Sentinel.

The protest was organised by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Tangkhul Frontal Organisation under the United Naga Council (UNC). Protesters gathered at Dungrei Junction and Mission Ground before marching to the Ukhrul Headquarters Ground for a public meeting.

The rally disrupted normal life as shops, private institutions, and public transport remained closed. Participants carried placards regarding militarisation, the ethnic conflict, and the presence of armed groups.

Other demands included the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, the declaration of Kuki militant organisations as terrorist groups, the repatriation of Kuki refugees, and the deportation of alleged illegal immigrants.

Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) president Ramreichan Keishing addressed the gathering, stating that Kuki groups operating under the SoO agreement are engaging in hostilities against the Naga community. Keishing also alleged that Assam Rifles had failed to maintain neutrality.

A similar protest was held in the neighbouring Kamjong district. Keishing warned that the agitation would continue until the demands are addressed.
