Five devotees from Gujarat die as car falls into river in Uttarkashi

Two people remain missing after an Innova carrying seven passengers went off the Gangotri National Highway on Thursday.

Five people died and two others are missing after a vehicle fell into a gorge and landed in a river near Gangnani in Uttarkashi district on Thursday, according to The New Indian Express.

The Innova, which was travelling towards Gangotri Dham, went out of control on the Gangotri National Highway about 20 metres past a hot spring on the road to Dabrani.

The deceased have been identified as Surat-based lawyer Ashokbhai Patel, his wife Sudha, and their daughter Rutika. Their son, Vedant, a Class 12 Science student, was hospitalised with serious injuries.

Initial information indicates that six passengers were from Gujarat and the seventh person was the driver. The vehicle had departed from the Hina area earlier that morning.

District Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain said that police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and emergency medical teams were sent to the site immediately. He stated that five bodies have been recovered from the riverbank and search operations are continuing for the remaining occupants.

District Magistrate Prashant Arya has directed response teams to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. Authorities said the search will continue until the missing persons are traced.
