Manik Sarkar condemns alleged attack on BSF personnel in Sonamura

The former Tripura Chief Minister called for a joint investigation after security personnel were reportedly assaulted in Asavari village.

Former Tripura Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar has condemned the alleged assault on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Asavari village, Sonamura subdivision, on November 2, according to The News Mill and ANI.

The incident reportedly started when BSF personnel tried to stop an individual allegedly participating in illegal border trade. The person sustained injuries, which led to local residents protesting and blocking a road.

Two other BSF personnel travelling separately were also allegedly intercepted and seriously injured by protesters, Sarkar said. Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on X that eight people have been arrested in connection with the assault at Ashabari, Boxanagar, and promised strict legal action.

Sarkar noted that approximately 10 people, including two or three women, were arrested and held in police custody for four days. He suggested that if any wrongdoing had occurred, aggrieved individuals should have filed a formal complaint at a police station instead of taking the law into their own hands.

The former Chief Minister emphasised that local police must cooperate with the BSF to check border crimes. He also expressed concern regarding repeated attacks on security forces in the Sonamura border areas, noting that previous incidents resulted in loss of life.
