Odisha police sub-inspector caught taking Rs 10,000 bribe
The officer allegedly jumped into a pond to evade a vigilance team in Sambalpur district before being apprehended.
A sub-inspector of the Odisha Police, Sujit Kumar Mohanta, was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Sambalpur district, according to NewsX.
Mohanta, who is posted at the Mahulpali police station, reportedly demanded the money from a complainant to settle a minor case. On Thursday evening, the officer allegedly met the complainant at an isolated location outside the station to accept the amount.
When the officer sensed the presence of the vigilance team, he attempted to flee by jumping into a nearby pond. A member of the vigilance team entered the water and swam towards him to apprehend him.
Vigilance officials recovered the full Rs 10,000 bribe from Mohanta. During subsequent raids at locations linked to the sub-inspector, officials found Rs 1,55,700 in cash in his rest room located within the police station premises.
The raids were conducted on suspicion that the officer possessed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Mohanta joined the Odisha Police as a sub-inspector through direct recruitment in 2021.
A case has been registered at the Sambalpur Vigilance Police Station under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is currently underway.
