Hakeem Jeffries bids to become first Black US House Speaker

The New York Democrat seeks the position following Democratic gains in the midterm elections.

Hakeem Jeffries has formally announced his candidacy to become the next Speaker of the US House of Representatives. The move follows the Democratic Party's victory in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, according to reports from The Tribune and ANI.

Jeffries, the current House Democratic leader, sent a letter to his colleagues on Wednesday requesting their support. He aims to become the first Black lawmaker to hold the speakership, a role that ranks second in the presidential line of succession.

In his letter, Jeffries stated that he would fight for an affordable America, noting that life is too expensive for many taxpayers. He also outlined priorities including accountability and American values for the upcoming Congress.

The Democratic leadership elections are scheduled to take place behind closed doors on November 18. To secure the party's nomination, Jeffries must obtain more than half of the House Democrats' support.

If he wins the nomination, he will need at least 218 votes on the House floor to be elected Speaker when the new Congress begins on January 3. He would succeed Republican Mike Johnson.

Before his current role, Jeffries served in the New York State Assembly and worked as a lawyer. He has been the House Democratic leader since January 2023, after succeeding Nancy Pelosi.
