IGIMS performs Bihar's first fully government-funded liver transplant

A 19-year-old woman received a liver transplant in Patna using organs donated by a 16-year-old boy.

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna performed Bihar's first liver transplant fully funded by the state government on Thursday. According to The Times of India, the procedure was carried out on a 19-year-old woman from Anisabad.

The liver was donated by 16-year-old Monu Kumar, a resident of Hanuman Nagar, Patna, who was declared brain dead following a road accident on October 19. His family consented to donate his liver and both kidneys, saving three lives.

The liver and one kidney were transplanted at IGIMS, while the second kidney was transplanted at AIIMS Patna. The liver surgery was led by Dr Manish Mandal, head of the gastro surgery and liver transplantation department.

IGIMS deputy director (administration) and spokesperson Dr Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha stated that this was the first time the Bihar government fully funded such a transplant. Health minister Nishant recently approved financial assistance of Rs 15 lakh per patient for these procedures at the institute.

Nishant described the successful surgery as a step toward making advanced treatment accessible and a Diwali gift for the state. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also congratulated the medical team and the donor's family.
