Two dead and several feared trapped after building collapse in Old Delhi
A three-storey building under construction in Chawri Bazaar collapsed on Thursday morning, prompting a rescue operation.
At least two people have died and several others are feared trapped under debris after a three-storey building collapsed in Gali Sitara, near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station, on Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred in Old Delhi, was reported to the Delhi Fire Services at 9.50 a.m., according to The Hindu.
Locals had already rescued four people and moved them to a hospital before fire personnel arrived at the site. At least six fire units, including rescue vehicles and water tenders, were sent to the location to manage the operation, officials said.
Resident Shabaz stated that the building had been under construction for the last 2-3 months and was being built as a residence for the owners. Another local, Mirza Sahib, said there was no sound heard when the structure sank.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned the effectiveness of safety audits conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's government. This follows a recent incident in northeast Delhi's Milan Garden where two men, Chanderpal and Vijay Kumar, died after roof slabs collapsed during construction work.
