Kerala sanctions ₹1 lakh compensation for worker assaulted by police officer

The amount will be reimbursed to the government by the Varkala Sub-Inspector following an order from the State Human Rights Commission.

The Kerala government has sanctioned ₹1 lakh in compensation for Suresh, a construction worker from Chathannoor, who was assaulted by a Varkala Sub-Inspector on August 30, 2022, according to South First.

The compensation follows an order from Kerala State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas. The Home Department Additional Chief Secretary directed the release of the funds to the worker.

Suresh was reportedly assaulted while building a compound wall at a house in Palachira. He had complained of difficulty in urination and severe pain in his lower abdomen after the incident.

In a response to the Human Rights Commission, the Sub-Inspector said the worker had been taken into custody regarding a case involving the suspected illegal excavation of soil.

The officer was ordered to pay the compensation amount back to the government exchequer within 15 days. The State Police Chief has informed the Home Department that the officer deposited the required sum.
