Security forces launch search operation in Manipur after Naga group clash

Three people were killed during a gunfight between rival Naga militant factions in the Noney district on Wednesday.

Security personnel launched an extensive search operation in Manipur's Noney district on Thursday following a clash between rival Naga armed groups. According to Odisha Bytes, a combined force of the Manipur Police and central security agencies began door-to-door verification in the Nungba and Kekru Naga areas at approximately 3.30 am.

The operation involves over 500 personnel from the Assam Rifles, CRPF, CoBRA, and district police. Officials stated the cordon-and-search exercise aims to secure the area and identify individuals connected to the violence.

The gunfire occurred around 4 am on Wednesday in Taodaijang village, located in the Khoupum area. The confrontation is suspected to have involved members of the Zeliangrong United Front (Jenchui) and opposing groups.

The ZUF (Jenchui) identified two of the deceased as its cadres, M Thaimei and G Kamson. The group claimed the NSCN (IM), the ZUF (Kamson faction), and the NSCN-K (Niki Sumi) started the clash. A third man, Aihung Khumba from Pungmon Chingchen village, was also found dead, though officials have not established his group affiliation.

Following the shooting, local residents, including many women, used a loudspeaker to appeal to the armed cadres to stop firing. Bhaskar English reported that some villagers have begun moving to safer locations due to fears of further violence.
