Garbage accumulation in Guwahati’s Morabharalu River sparks dispute between residents and GMC

Residents of Arya Nagar claim the Guwahati Municipal Corporation has failed to prevent the river from becoming a dumping ground for plastic and thermocol.

The Morabharalu River in the Arya Nagar area of Guwahati is becoming a dumping ground for plastic bottles, thermocol, and other discarded materials, according to The Assam Tribune.

The accumulation of waste has caused foul smells and unhygienic conditions, while residents expressed concerns that the debris could restrict water flow and lead to artificial flooding.

A local resident stated that dumping materials into the river obstructs its natural flow and threatens the city's drainage system, noting that burying waste under soil could narrow the channel.

A local youth alleged that the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has failed to implement effective measures to stop the river from being used for waste disposal, despite previous announcements regarding cleaning initiatives.

Responding to the allegations, a GMC official said that while the civic body conducts regular cleaning and door-to-door household waste collection, the public must also take responsibility to prevent recurring issues.

The official stated that cleaning efforts have limited impact without public awareness and appealed to citizens to stop illegal dumping, adding that the current situation will be addressed soon.
