Naga groups stage mass rallies in Manipur to end proxy war
Protestors in Ukhrul and Kamjong demanded the withdrawal of Assam Rifles and urgent central intervention to resolve the state's political crisis.
Naga groups staged rallies at the district headquarters of Ukhrul and Kamjong in Manipur on Thursday, demanding that the Centre intervene to end a proxy war and withdraw the Assam Rifles from Naga-inhabited areas, according to The Indian Express.
The protests were organised by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and other Tangkhul frontal organisations under the United Naga Council (UNC). The rallies followed an incident on Wednesday evening where suspected armed militants opened fire on passenger vehicles on the Imphal–Ukhrul highway, causing panic although no casualties were reported.
Protestors used banners and placards to demand the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement and the declaration of Kuki militant groups as terrorist organisations. The Nagas have accused the Manipur government of using Kuki militants against other communities.
TNL president Sword Vasum criticised the state government for failing to ensure security along the Imphal–Ukhrul highway. Vasum alleged that Assam Rifles personnel stationed near violence-affected areas failed to intervene during incidents of gunfire and house burnings.
Vasum stated that what should be treated as abnormal is now being treated as normal in Manipur. He also submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to give the urgent issues serious consideration.
Yuimihor Huileng, a college student participating in the protest, said the prolonged conflict is causing fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among the youth.
